Niger Overland in a Land Rover Defender

Travelling in Niger: One of the poorest countries in the world

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, and this was apparent as we drove through Niger from Mali, following the Niger river.

We stayed in Niamey (the capital city of Niger) while applying for our visa to enter Chad and visiting Parc W, our first wildlife experience on our overland Africa journey driving from the UK to South Africa in our land rover Defender TDI.

What we didn't expect was to meet a group of French students in Parc W, and to be invited out to join them in their research of hippos. The motto of the story? Don't trust students!

Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa (more than once).

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.
